Southwell School is New Zealand's only co-educational primary day and boarding school.  Southwell School provides for up to 70 students (40 boys and 30 girls) from Years 5 - 8.  It is the aim of the school to provide a caring, home-like atmosphere for boarders.  Their days are well-organised and ample time is allowed for them to pursue their own interests.

The care and needs of boarders are catered for by staff, including a Housemaster, Assistant Housemaster, Housemother, 4 House Tutors, Head Chef and a team of Kitchen staff.  The boarding team is managed by a Director of Boarding.

The routines of the Boarding house have been well-established over the years and cater for the students’ academic, social, physical and emotional growth and well-being.  Boarders quickly develop a sense of independence, awareness of community-living, with a desire to care for others.
