Welcome to the Southwell School Boarding House
This handbook is designed to provide easy access to information that boarders and their families need regarding communication, daily routines and the day to day running of the Boarding House. We hope that it can act as a reference point to assist you throughout the year.
The following values underpin everything which we aim to nurture and to encourage in our Boarding House.

Art Costa’s ‘Habits of Mind’ are also referred to frequently by the Staff in an effort to help our Boarders learn positive life habits that not only help them in their daily interaction here, but also long after they have left to go on to Secondary School and beyond.
Persistence - sticking to it!
Managing impulsivity - thinking before acting!
Listening to others with empathy and understanding - being
considerate towards others!
Being flexible - being prepared to try new ways of doing
things!
Being full of wonderment - looking for the fun in everything!
Finding humour – trying to see the funny side of situations!
