GEORGE DINGLE
eorge attended Southwell in 1941 as a boarder after the untimely passing of his mother in an accident. His time at Southwell was extremely
productive as a valued member of East House and was an enthusiastic and talented competitor on multiple pitches; a prolific try scorer in the First XV Rugby team and opening batsman for the First XI Cricket team. Off the paddock George was on a stage, singing and dancing alongside Murray Day in the Iolanthe Chorus, then later Ruddigore. Also a chorister and prefect, George was one of those all round humble achievers.
More recently, George was top of the list for assistance when it came to accurately authenticating many urban legends from Southwell days gone by...often including the odd rendition of his varying songs from Opera shows some 70 odd years earlier!
A welcome addition at Founders Day celebrations, we
last saw Betty in the Fellows Group at the 2020 event and enjoyed her charming conversation and recollections.
We send Betty’s family our warmest condolences. A mother of 3, Grandmother of 8 and Great Grandmother to 4, you will be missed. Rest in peace.

Glenn Holmes, Warden of the Fellows remembers his fellow Foundation Trustee George for his invaluable mentorship, “His values and principles, along with his pragmatism and practical good sense, gave the Foundation a guide to travel along, particularly in its formative years. As Chairman, I was very grateful for his support and presence. Southwell and its Foundation has benefitted significantly from George’s trustee input.”
George’s love for Southwell remained strong as a past parent, past Foundation Trustee, past President of the Old Boys Committee, Southwell Fellow and a great Southwell supporter. George’s quick wit, fabulous storytelling and passion for all things Southwell will be missed.
