HOCKEY
As usual, Southwell had a strong presence on the hockey pitch, with five teams entered in the Waikato Hockey Intermediate Competition and five teams entered in the various Year 1-6 competitions.
Thank you to all the coaches. You played a big role in developing the players' hockey skills and knowledge throughout the season.
Highlights always include the experience of travelling away from home and being billeted. Both the 1st and 2nd XI teams had this experience this year when they travelled to Huntley School in Marton. Many special memories are made from these billeting experiences, and there are many tales to tell!
Another highlight of the season was the 1st Xl team, competing in the Premier Grade final. It was a very intense game against Cambridge Middle School, that in the end was decided on a penalty shoot-out, with Southwell coming out the victors.
The 2nd Xl, also had a stirling season, coming fourth in the A grade.
A highlight in the season for the Year 5 and 6 teams was that both the Southwell Comets and the Southwell Galaxies made the Milne Cup. This meant they both competed against the top hockey teams in Hamilton. The Southwell Comets then went on to win the Milne Cup in a close-fought final. This was a great success for this team.
As always the biggest highlight is seeing a team playing as a unit, and players having fun. Congratulations to all those students who strapped on their shinpads, pulled up their socks, put two hands on their hockey stick and got stuck in, emptying their tanks in all their games.
A huge thank you goes to all the Southwell supporters who turned up each week and gave positive support to all the hockey teams. It meant a great deal to all the players to have encouragement from the sidelines.
