The rock bands this year have done an outstanding job and have had a great time jamming and performing together. The students have been super lucky to have the talents of Dan Cosgrove and Jeremy Badger as tutors. Dan has dedicated his time to C-Shock and Hot Note, while Jeremy worked with the Baksteen Boyz.
All three bands played at the local Band Slam competition and completely rocked it out. Individual awards were given to Benjamin Lou, Thomas Priest, Harper Mills, Avinash Patel, Zane Merson and Gabriella Schuitemaker. The Baksteen Boyz were lucky enough to place third overall! The Baksteen Boyz also went on to take part in the live Regional Bandquest Competition where they held their own against some tough competitors. They competed against 12 other schools across the Waikato and came away with the win! As a result of this, they went on to compete against other bands in the National Competition. C-Shock and Hot Note also took part in the Regional Bandquest Competition via video submission and Aditya Manda was awarded Best Vocalist. All of these events were thoroughly enjoyable and gave the band members a taste of what live performing is truly like.
Another of the highlights of the year was playing at Founder's Day. As the heavens opened and the rain poured down, the enthusiastic mosh pit was highly entertained by the skills of all three bands. Covers were played as the crowd sang and danced along.
Sincere thanks must go to Mrs Trenwith for her support and enthusiasm, and both tutors for giving up their time and ensuring that rock music is alive and well at Southwell School.

The Ensemble groups at Southwell School are an introduction to playing chamber music. For many musicians, this is the rst time they have played in a trio or quartet, where, unlike orchestra, each and every instrument can be heard like a dialogue.
The ensemble this year is made up of two violinists (Frances Gregory and myself), cellist Alex Ko, autist Jacqueline Li and pianist Roy Zhu. Together, we split up into three different Ensemble groups.
We have all enjoyed being in the Ensemble this year. Unfortunately, because of Covid-19, we didn’t do as much as we would have liked to do, but it was still really awesome to make music together.
Directed by the spectacular Mrs Trenwith, we have loved our Friday lunchtime sessions in the Music Room and we look forward to hearing future Southwell ensembles play.
