KAPA HAKA
KO TE AROHA ANŌ HE WAI, E PUPŪ AKE ANA, HE AWA E MĀPUNA MAI ANA
Words from one of my favourite Kapa Haka Waiata, Tai Aroha: Love is like water, continually bubbling up, a spring that will keep flowing.
After two decades of promoting and persisting, our passion and love for Kapa Haka at Southwell, this year bubbled up to its full current potential and like a spring will keep flowing for
years to come.
Hopefully for the last time, Covid created minor interruptions in getting the ball rolling for Kapa Haka this year, but once we
got rolling we never stopped. A true blessing and sign of support from the Southwell community was our ability to attain a set of male and female piupiu to wear with our amazing kakahu. The piupiu were expertly hand made by Cathy Schuster from Lake Rotoiti in Rotorua. To make this connection even more special, Cathy, our piupiu master, is the grandmother of Hope Schuster who is a member of the Kapa Haka group. Southwell
truly is one big whanau!
With the wahine looking tu meke in their new piupiu, Whaea Whetu focused on a Poi waiata for them which was a great new addition to our Kapa Haka bracket. The year ended with some great performances at Founder's Day, WFPSA Kapa Haka Festival and Senior Prize Giving. However, the highlight was a special Whanau Concert where the students performed their waiata for their families and Southwell staff, who have been great supporters of the Kapa Haka movement over the years. Students also delivered several mihi about the waiata and haka they performed.
Congratulations to all students who received Kapa Haka Colours and to Molly Milroy and Phoenyx Tiffany for being presented with the Kingi Tuheitia Award for demonstrating leadership in Kapa Haka.
