                  INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
The String Orchestra at Southwell is a group where kids are introduced to playing a string instrument as a group. This year the String Orchestra was the largest it has ever been with students from Year 1 to Year 8, playing all different instruments consisting of violins, cellos, piano, bass and viola.
Despite Covid-19 the String Orchestra was able to play for an audience a few times. This year it was the 100th Opera at Southwell. We celebrated at a Performing Arts Concert with every cultural group playing a piece of music from a past Opera. The String Orchestra played Beauty and the Beast from the show of the same name, which Southwell performed in 2017.
Another highlight of the year was playing at the Matariki Assembly. This was the first time that a Kapa Haka group and a music group played together. We played Hine E Hine while the junior Kapa Haka sang.
Every Thursday morning as a group we worked hard to learn new pieces of music. A huge thank you to Mrs Trenwith for conducting us this year. I can't wait to see how big the String Orchestra will become in the future.

At Southwell the Wind Band is an introduction to playing in music groups. Despite the lockdowns that we have encountered, and the challenges due to Covid-19, I know that everyone has enjoyed creating fabulous music on Tuesday mornings.
Wind Band is an auditioned group of students ranging from Year 3 to Year 8. This ensemble consists of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trombones, guitars, trumpets, a wide variety of percussion, and a tuba.
Musicians who play in this group all practise very hard and work together to create astonishing music. Although during 2021 there have been limited concerts to perform and play at, we have indulged in every experience possible. The Performing Arts Concert, celebrating 100 Years of Opera, was a blast! We played classical highlights from The Wizard of Oz - the music told the audience a wonderful story and everyone had a great night. Another highlight of this year was Grandparents' Day. All of our repertoire that we have produced this year has been based around the theme of Music from the Movies. At this particular concert, our inner Stormtroopers were released as we played The Main Theme from Star Wars.
Sincere thanks to Mrs Trenwith for always supporting us and being our phenomenal conductor. We have all enjoyed ourselves this year as we make fine music together and I can’t wait to hear what future wind bands and Southwell music groups will play!
