INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
ROCK BAND : MAJESTIC MAYHEM
Gabriella Schuitemaker, Kaedan Govender, Arnah Currie, Georgez Ruffell, Caroline Glander
This year, Covid-19 has cancelled many musical activities, but the rock bands have not been affected greatly by it.
Meraki, Micro Pies and Majestic Mayhem all competed in this year’s Bandslam and Bandquest competitions, and were lucky enough to come away with a few prizes. For individual awards in Bandslam, Aditya Manda and Kyra-Mae Wilson both got second best male and female vocalists, Avinash Patel received second best keyboard player, Arnah Currie acquired third best female vocalist, and Gabriella Schuitemaker came away with second best other instrument (violin). Finally, because this all wasn’t enough, Majestic Mayhem, consisting of Arnah Currie, Caroline Glander, Gabriella Schuitemaker, Georgez Ruffell and Kaeden Govender, was awarded second best band overall.
Much like last year the Bandquest Competition couldn't proceed in person, and so Southwell's bands again went through the online submission process for the Waikato region. Majestic Mayhem took first place, with Avinash Patel from Meraki winning Best Keyboard Player and Gabriella Schuitemaker from Majestic Mayhem winning the Musicianship Award.
In addition to this exciting regional success we were thrilled that Gabriella Schiutemaker was awarded the national Rockstar Styles Award for her rapping and violin playing in Majestic Mayhem. This has topped off our year fantastically!
This year was the first year we had a Junior Rock Band for Year 5 and 6 students. Coached by Jeremy Trenwith, the band worked hard to learn a Foo Fighters song and perform it for the Year 5 and 6 Syndicate and some Year 8 classes. Due to Covid-19 they didn't perform as much as they would have liked, but it was still a very successful year.
2021 has been great for all of our rock bands, even with Covid-19 and the pandemic. But none of this could have been possible without the leadership of Dan Cosgrove, Jeremy Badger and Jeremy Trenwith.
Also, a huge shout out to Mr and Mrs Trenwith, for helping us record our online submissions and encouraging us every step of the way. Your consistent work has been greatly appreciated. All this goes to show that rock music is eternal, and not even Covid-19 can stop the power of music!
