  He honore,
He kororia ki te Atua,
He maungarongo ki te whenua, He whakaaro pai ki a tātou katoa.
This year we have seen Te Reo begin its journey here at Southwell, with classes for all students from Years 2 to 8. Te Reo is also being spoken and sung in our regular Chapel services with Reverend Pickering; at Junior Kapa Haka with Matua Arama for our Year 3 to 6 tamariki; and with a new school- specific haka written by Matua Arama, which was performed for the first time at our whole school Matariki Assembly. Te Reo was also included in some of the house waiata sung during the House Singing competition.
Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu tonu.
Despite it being small, it is still a treasure.

Chinese language and cultural experiences are celebrated at Southwell, and 2021 was no different.
In Term 1, Chinese Culture Day brought excitement, smiles and laughter to the Square. There were five activities to enjoy:
• calligraphy
• • •
• •
ping pong run chopstick challenge ring toss
a dragon parade the Chinese drum
Students of all ages were eager to try these fun games and everyone received an award for participating. We thank the
Chinese parents for organising the day and donating the prizes.
Language and food are intertwined for people from around the world, and Chinese culture is no exception. In June, Year 7 students made spring rolls, and they impressed the Chinese parent helpers with the Mandarin they learned in class.
Term 3 Languages Week is a showcase of our diverse and multicultural community. We decorated the Square with flags representing the national origins of the Southwell families. Nine students were selected to say the Lord’s Prayer at Chapel in Maori, Korean, Mandarin, Russian,
Hindi, Punjabi, Afrikaans and Cantonese.
