KIDS’ LIT QUIZ
Bollywood dancing in the Library; building the Eiffel Tower out of playing cards; making Cookie Monster pavlovas; competing in the KLQ versions of The Amazing Race and The Chase and lots and lots of laughter are just some of the favourites memories for this year’s Kids’ Lit Quiz teams. In amongst all the fun, there was a lot of hard work though!
After Covid-19 interrupted 2020, we were thrilled when the 30th anniversary Waikato regional heat of the Kids’ Lit. Quiz went ahead without a hitch in May. Our two Southwell teams performed exceptionally well, with Team 1 (Aditya Manda, Frances Gregory, Grace Walden and Aria Jones) coming second and Team 2 (Evie Sharman, Lincoln Chapman, Mia Donovan and Anurag Manda) placing third. As we had such a big heat this year, the top two teams qualified for the National Final, which meant that once again Southwell qualified to represent our region. It was bitterly disappointing that the National Final was postponed several times, before eventually being cancelled, due to lockdowns and the uncertainty of Delta.
Despite the disappointments, we were able to finish the year on a high note, with both teams competing in the Southwell version of The Amazing Race. After visiting France, Italy, India, South Africa, Egypt and Australia, and completing all kinds of crazy challenges, both teams finished the day having laughed, danced and eaten a lot!
My thanks go to the students in both teams, and their families, to Mrs Walch, Mr Cameron, Mrs McLean, Mrs Riggins and Mr Bryan, and to my family for all their support. I couldn’t have done it without them!
