come to know him in his fullness. Not in spite of them, but through them!
Of course that doesn’t mean we should worship stuff. But another way of worship is simply by enjoying stuff. The point? God loves stuff. He made it, he sent his Son in the form of it, and the New Heavens and the New Earth are filled with it.
We ought not be limited to worshiping God at Christmas through prayer, songs and Bible reading – but also through enjoyment of his earthly gifts. At Christmas, for example: the lights on a Christmas tree, the texture of sand through our toes at the beach, the refracted light on tinsel, the perfume emitted by ‘Christmas Lilies’. It’s worship just to engage with this stuff and call it good like God called it.
This Christmastide, begin practicing that now by proclaiming the Incarnation of Jesus in all its implications – material ones included. What’s Christmas all about? That Jesus came as the salvation of our souls and our bodies – and a proper celebration of the Incarnation will require both.
Enjoy, celebrate, and worship all that is God’s as we reflect on this Christmas break. I pray that you have a safe and joyous Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
Yours in Christ
Reverend Canon Neale Troon Chaplain
MAKING ALL HALLOWS BEAUTIFUL
THANKS SUE SALE
Flowers have graced All Hallows Chapel since the day its doors opened. The creative genius behind the last 18 years of gorgeous floral displays in the Chapel is Sue Sale.
Originally from the UK, Sue decided to relocate to
New Zealand following her daughter and their growing family in 2000. Fast forward a few years to 2004 and it was time for grandsons James Adams (2004-11) and Marcus Adams (2007-15) to start their journey through Southwell.
While Sue’s interest in floral art began in the UK as part of a Floral Art Club and taking the odd design class, her lightbulb moment was the day she walked through the doors of All Hallows for the first time. Literally a case of love at first sight for our beloved chapel, this was not the case for the floral display... that was more of a “hmmmmm” moment! Sue immediately decided
to join the flower roster. The rest, as they say, is years of magnificent seasonal floral colour and form and the divine scent of Lillies and stock.
