Great lives start at Southwell

The Southwell Library is one of the focal points in the school, and it is a place that every child experiences every week of every year that they are at Southwell.
The Library is staffed by two qualified teachers, Mrs Penny Walch (full time), and Mrs Julie Huggins (part time).
They are passionate about matching students to quality reading material, whilst also supporting staff and students with their Inquiry teaching and learning.
Southwell also has a proud history of competing in the Kids’ Lit. Quiz tournament – not least being World Champions in 2015.
If you would like to know more, please contact Penny Walch at penny.walch@southwell.school.nz

We subscribe to the Wheelers consortium which shares access to nearly 2000 e-Books and nearly 700 audio books. This is a wonderful resource as the shared nature of it enables Wheelers to offer a really cost-effective service. The only downside of this is that there is a limit on how many books a school can borrow per month (in order to make sure there is fair use.) The guideline is about two issues per student per month. In order to make sure we work within our limit we ask the students to read the blurb of the book BEFORE clicking Borrow… and when they DO click Borrow, they are doing so in the understanding that they are going to give that book a really good go!
Wheelers have included handy e-Book settings, which means it is easier for students to customise the display features when they open up a book. This will be particularly useful for students with dyslexia or other conditions that make reading difficult.
